We have a vacancy for a PhD-candidate at the Department of Structural Engineering which has about 120 employees, half of them PhD Students and about 17 Postdocs and researchers.
The current position will be affiliated to the Concrete group which is a team of scientists dedicated to the study of all aspects of concrete. The Concrete group conducts research on concrete from material to structural level based on theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations. The Concrete group is involved in several national and international research projects, it has a close collaboration with the industry, and it has extended laboratory facilities with a rich history.
The candidate is expected to conduct research within the field of concrete airfield decks exposed to frost, deicing chemicals and impact loading.
Concrete airfields in Norway are mainly non-reinforced slabs cast on the ground and are exposed to freeze/thaw, deicers. impact from landing aircrafts and maybe also explosion. Over the years poor frost durability has been experienced on such decks. With the introduction of concrete made with large amounts of supplementary cementitious binders / pozzolana such as fly ash, slag, etc poor performance is often encountered in accelerated frost testing. This project will therefore study methods such as solid air voids of various kind (microspheres, superabsorbent polymers, cork powder etc), high strength/low w/b, biomimetic admixtures etc as well as traditional air entrainment to avoid frost damage (scaling, internal damage). The research shall give understanding on how to produce frost- and deicer durable concrete with respect to both surface- and internal damage. The latter can lead to loss of mechanical properties such as strength and stiffness. The candidate must therefore have concrete technology background (proportioning and experiments on fresh concrete mixes) as well as knowledge and understanding of mechanical properties.
The testing will include various frost protective measures, characterizing the concretes, i.e. protective void systems, effects on pore structure, frost durability and impact effects. Also accelerated frost testing with measurements of damage to surfaces, structural properties and resistance to impact loading is included.
The candidate will work with a team of experienced researchers within the fields of concrete technology, structural design and computational mechanics.
You will report to the supervising Professors Stefan Jacobsen, Jan Arve Øverli and Tore Børvik, NTNU, and Dr. Sumita Dey, Forsvarsbygg (Norwegian Defence Estates Agency).

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536 200,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.
